Web design in London
An independent studio actually based in London, with London work to prove it, and an honest answer on whether you and I ever need to be in the same room.
Type "web designer London" into a search bar and you get two kinds of result. Agencies, with account managers, discovery workshops and a quote that has to cover the office. Or directories full of freelancers who may or may not be in London, or indeed one person. If you are searching that phrase, I suspect you want something more specific: one accountable human, actually in the city, who does the work themselves and can sit across a table from you if it ever matters.
That is what Meko is. An independent studio in London, run by one designer-developer. I take the brief, I design the site, I build it, and I answer the emails. There is no handover to a production team, because there is no production team.
What "London based" should actually mean
A surprising number of London web design outfits are a local landing page in front of a team somewhere else entirely. Nothing wrong with distributed teams, but it is worth knowing what you are buying. When location matters to a business, it is rarely about geography for its own sake. It is about accountability: knowing exactly who is doing the work, being able to look them in the eye if you want to, and working with someone who moves at the speed London businesses expect, rather than a ticket queue in another timezone.
So here is my version, stated plainly. I live and work in London. The person you speak to on the first call is the person who designs and builds your site. And two of the three projects I have shipped are for London businesses you can go and look at right now.
The London work
The Key is an affordable housing platform connecting London's key workers, the nurses, teachers and transport staff who keep the city moving, with affordable homes near their workplace. The site had to speak to two very different audiences at once: the workers looking for a home, and the housing partners and institutions on the supply side. It shipped as a fully bespoke, hand-coded marketing site, mapped around those two audiences before any design work started.
Red Moss is a London film duo making original comedy and drama. Their site does the opposite job: the film is the interface and everything else gets out of the way, with their own work playing full bleed in the hero, tuned so the video never drags performance down on a phone.
Civic housing and cinema are about as far apart as briefs get, which is rather the point. I am not an agency locked into one industry. Each site is designed around what the business in front of me actually is.
The third project on the books, a UK-wide mortgage adviser matching service, ran entirely remotely from start to finish. Which brings us to the honest bit.
Do we actually need to meet?
Usually not, and I would rather tell you that than sell you proximity. The build runs through your own client portal: live previews at every stage, feedback pinned directly on the designs, and a formal sign-off before anything goes into production. You watch the site take shape from wherever you are, on your own schedule, with a written record of every decision.
Where being in the same city earns its keep is at the start. A kickoff over a coffee, talking through how your business actually wins work, is often worth more than three video calls. If you are in London and that appeals, easily done. If you would rather never leave your desk, the portal covers everything. What you will not get, either way, is the agency ritual of fortnightly status meetings that exist mainly to justify the invoice.
What it costs
The pricing is fixed and the same whether you are in Clerkenwell or Carlisle. A bespoke marketing site starts from £2,500. A conversion-focused build, with a strategy workshop, copywriting and technical SEO foundations, starts from £5,000. Platforms, portals and anything with a login are scoped individually after a proper discovery conversation. The pricing page sets out exactly what each tier includes, and the quote you agree before work starts is the quote you pay.
A typical marketing-site build takes around three weeks from kickoff to launch, and because nothing is built until the design is formally signed off, you get a real date before the project begins. Once the site is live, the Live care plan at £150 a month keeps it updated without anyone in your business having to think about it.
If you are weighing this up
The short version: an independent London studio gets you the accountability people search this phrase hoping for, without the overheads of an agency or the distance of an anonymous team. The work is public, the price is fixed, and the process is visible from day one. A thirty-minute call is enough to get you a quote in writing, and if a coffee somewhere in London suits you better than a video call, that works too.
Good questions
No. Most of the build runs through your own client portal: live previews at every stage, feedback pinned directly on the designs, and a formal sign-off before anything is built. If you are in London and a face-to-face kickoff would be useful, that works well. What you will not get is a diary full of status meetings.
No. I am based in London and two of my three projects so far are for London businesses, but the whole process runs through the portal, so location has never been a constraint. The third project, a UK-wide mortgage adviser matching service, ran entirely remotely.
The same as anywhere else I work. A bespoke marketing site starts from £2,500, a conversion-focused build starts from £5,000, and platforms or anything with a login are scoped individually after a discovery conversation. The quote is fixed in writing before work starts and never moves. There is no postcode premium.
A typical marketing-site build takes around three weeks from kickoff to launch. Because nothing gets built until the design is formally signed off in the portal, you get a real launch date before the project begins, not a hopeful one.
So far: an affordable housing platform for London key workers, a London film duo, and a UK mortgage adviser matching service. The common thread is established businesses that need their website to do a real job, not one particular industry. If your project involves logins, dashboards or a portal, it gets scoped individually.
